Preparing for a job interview? While every company and role is different, certain questions come up again and again. Hiring managers want to get a sense of who you are, how you think, and whether you’re a good fit for their team. Knowing what to expect—and how to answer strategically—can make all the difference.

Here are five of the most common interview questions and tips for answering each one:

1. “Tell me about yourself.”

They’re asking who you are professionally, and why you are sitting in front of me?

Think of this as your elevator pitch. Focus on your background, key skills, and what led you to this opportunity. Keep it concise and relevant to the job. Wrap up the question by briefly stating why you’re excited about this role.

Example: “I’m a marketing associate with three years of experience in digital campaigns, content strategy, and SEO. I’ve worked with startups and mid-size agencies and am passionate about using storytelling to drive results. I’m excited about this role because it blends creativity with data-driven strategy.”

2. “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”

This question aims to know if you’re self-aware and coachable.

When answering, choose a real strength relevant to the role, and back it up with a quick example. For your weakness, pick something honest but not crucial to the job, and show how you’re working to improve.

Strength example: “One of my strengths is communication—I’ve often been the go-to person for translating technical ideas into client-friendly language.”

Weakness example: “I used to struggle with delegating, but I’ve been intentionally working on it by creating clearer processes and trusting team members with ownership.”

3. “Why do you want to work here?”

AKA, have you done your homework?

Show you’ve researched the company. Mention specific aspects—values, mission, recent projects—that resonate with you, and explain how your goals align.

Example: “I admire your company’s focus on sustainability and innovation. I’m passionate about developing products that have real impact, and I see a strong alignment between your mission and my experience in product design.”

4. “Tell me about a time you faced a challenge at work.”

What they’re really asking: Can you problem-solve and handle pressure?

Use the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to walk through the challenge and how you handled it.

5. “Do you have any questions for us?”

This is to find out if you are engaged and curious. Always say yes and have thoughtful questions prepared. They can be about the team, company culture, or upcoming goals. It shows interest and preparation.

Practice your responses out loud, but don’t memorize them word-for-word. The goal is to sound prepared, not like a robot. For more help with interviewing, explore Resume All Day’s Interview Prep Guide or 1:1 interview coaching services.
