Your First Resume: What to Include When You Don’t Have Much Experience

If you’re in high school or college, you might be thinking: “I don’t have enough experience to put on a resume.” Here’s the good news — you probably do. Early-career resumes aren’t about long job histories. They’re about potential, transferable skills, and proof of responsibility. Let’s break it down.

1. Start With What You Do Have

You can include:

  • Part-time jobs

  • Babysitting or tutoring

  • Volunteer work

  • School projects

  • Clubs and leadership roles

  • Athletics

  • Academic achievements

Admissions officers and employers understand you’re just getting started. They want to see initiative and involvement.

2. Focus on Skills, Not Just Job Titles

Even if your job was “Cashier,” your resume might show:

  • Managed transactions averaging $1,000 per shift with accuracy

  • Delivered customer service in a fast-paced retail environment

  • Trained two new team members

See the difference? It’s about impact and responsibility.

3. Highlight Academic & Project Experience

If you don’t have work experience, lean into research projects, group presentations, capstone assignments and papers, and relevant coursework.

For example:

  • Conducted a semester-long research project analyzing social media marketing trends and presented findings to a class of 30 students

That shows communication, research, and analytical skills.

4. Include Extracurricular Leadership

Colleges and employers value:

  • Team captains

  • Club officers

  • Event organizers

Leadership doesn’t require a paycheck. It requires responsibility.

5. Keep It Clean and Professional

Stick to one page, use clear section headers, use action verbs, and maintain consistent formatting. Avoid long paragraphs, objective statements that say nothing specific, and irrelevant personal details.

The goal isn’t to look “experienced.” The goal is to look motivated and capable. Everyone starts somewhere. A strong early resume shows growth, curiosity, and readiness to learn.
