Know Your Worth: How to Talk Compensation Without Selling Yourself Short

You’ve nailed the interview, the conversation flowed, and now it’s coming — the money talk. This moment can make even the most confident candidate second-guess what to say next. Should you bring up salary first? Wait it out? Here’s the move that keeps your value front and center.

Step one: Let them go first. When possible, hold off on naming a number until the employer shares their range. It’s not about playing games — it’s about protecting your position. If you give a number too early, you might set the ceiling instead of the floor. A simple line like, “I’d love to learn more about the role’s scope and expectations before discussing numbers — could you share the range you’ve budgeted for this position?” shows professionalism and confidence.

Step two: Know what you’re worth. If they press for your expectations, be ready. Research your market value using Glassdoor, Salary.com, or LinkedIn Salary Insights. When responding, use a range that reflects your experience and the current market rate — and don’t apologize for it. Example:“Based on my experience and what I’ve seen for similar roles, I’d expect something in the $65,000–$75,000 range, depending on the full compensation package.”That phrasing tells them you know your value and that salary is only one part of the conversation.

Step three: Think beyond base pay. Compensation is more than a number on a paycheck. Benefits, bonuses, PTO, remote flexibility, and growth opportunities can make a big difference. Ask about them directly — not as demands, but as factors in how you evaluate fit. Try: “I like to look at the full picture when considering an offer. Could you tell me more about benefits, flexibility, and professional development support?”

Your goal isn’t just to get an offer — it’s to get one that reflects your worth and sets you up for long-term success. Confident candidates don’t chase numbers; they make informed decisions.
